"Apokries" is an old Istanbul tradition and a carnaval that was revitalized by the Armada Hotel for the first time on February 14th, 2010. Apokries, the carnival of fun and masquerade once celebrated by the Greek Orthodox community in Istanbul (*) every year during Ottoman Empire will be celebrated once again at Armada Salon with a live musical performance by “Café Aman Istanbul”, a renowned Rembetiko band comprised of Turkish and Greek musicians.
This year's the event will be held on March 12, 2016, Saturday evening at 20:30 PM.

Stating that he has been to Sultanahmet, Hagia Sofia and Grand Bazaar, Abbas Sofi said: "I visited at the historical places. I hope we will come again as whole family during Nawrouz holiday". Mensume Can also said that she is intending to repeat her visit on Nawruz...

“The 51st Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey”

MIND THE SUNDAY TRAFFIC IN SULTANAHMET!

Many international riders are set to hit the road, as the “The 51st Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey”, the country’s oldest and most prestigious cycling event starts this weekend... The world's sole "transcontinental cycling tour" race will be kicked-off in Sultanahmet Square at 10:00 o’clock in the morning and some of the adjacent streets will be closed to traffic...

The 51st edition of the “Tour of Turkey”, or the “Presidential Cycling Tour”, will stage a eight-leg race between more than 150 cyclists from all around the world, pedaling their way from Alanya to İzmir on a route that spans the coats on the Aegean and Mediterranean regions. The Istanbul stage on Sunday (May 3, 2015) will start from Sultanahmet Square at 10:00 a.m. and some of the streets from and to the Square will be closed to traffic. Our Reception Desk has a list of them which could be seen also in the official website of the Tour (*), so that, please arrange your morning program accordingly in order not to be affected by the closed traffic and enjoy your Sunday!

A century ago famous Russian organizer Sergei Diaghilev revolutionized ballet by inviting the most talented painters and musicians of his time to contribute to his performances. I have the impression that present day choreographers neglect the other arts, do not feel the need to present their creations alongside their equals in other fields.

   I am sure audiences would appreciate more arts included in dance performances, starting with the classical arts: painting, sculpture, theater, music, poetry, architecture, as well as more modern forms like photography, cinema, multimedia, lighting design, sound design. Let me go further in proposing to enrich choreography with the humanities (history, literature, philosophy and linguistics). Personally I would particularly enjoy storytelling, martial arts, and - I mean it very seriously - culinary arts.

    There is nothing new to it, ancient Greeks in their symposia combined all the above. After 25 centuries we could return to the idea that a complete performance combines as many arts as possible.

    This year the International Dance Council CID joins forces with a sister organization to celebrate Dance Day. The International Association of Art IAA/AIAP is a non-governmental organization whose offices are next to ours at UNESCO. Our common proposal is to combine dance with painting, drawing, sculpture or other forms of creative work in the visual arts.

    Many thanks to Ms. Rosa-Maria Burillo from Mexico, World President of IAA/AIAP, who mobilized artists from dozens of countries suggesting they cooperate with choreographers, dancers and dance teachers in common events: performances, exhibitions, happenings, flashmobs, worship meetings, therapeutic sessions and (why not?) banquets!

Happy World Theatre Day!

The author of the Message of World Theatre Day 2015 is the Polish director Krzysztof Warlikowski! And here is the message:

The true masters of the theater are most easily found far from the stage. And they generally have no interest in theater as a machine for replicating conventions and reproducing clichés. They search out the pulsing source, the living currents that tend to bypass performance halls and the throngs of people bent on copying some world or another. We copy instead of create worlds that are focused or even reliant on debate with an audience, on emotions that swell below the surface. And actually there is nothing that can reveal hidden passions better than the theater.  

Most often I turn to prose for guidance.  Day in and day out I find myself thinking about writers who nearly one hundred years ago described prophetically but also restrainedly the decline of the European gods, the twilight that plunged our civilization into a darkness that has yet to be illumined. I am thinking of Franz Kafka, Thomas Mann and Marcel Proust. Today I would also count John Maxwell Coetzee among that group of prophets.

Their common sense of the inevitable end of the world—not of the planet but of the model of human relations—and of social order and upheaval, is poignantly current for us here and now. For us who live after the end of the world. Who live in the face of crimes and conflicts that daily flare in new places faster even than the ubiquitous media can keep up. These fires quickly grow boring and vanish from the press reports, never to return. And we feel helpless, horrified and hemmed in. We are no longer able to build towers, and the walls we stubbornly construct do not protect us from anything—on the contrary, they themselves demand protection and care that consumes a great part of our life energy. We no longer have the strength to try and glimpse what lies beyond the gate, behind the wall. And that’s exactly why theater should exist and where it should seek its strength. To peek inside where looking is forbidden.

 “The legend seeks to explain what cannot be explained. Because it is grounded in truth, it must end in the inexplicable”—this is how Kafka described the transformation of the Prometheus legend.  I feel strongly that the same words should describe the theater. And it is that kind of theater, one which grounded in truth and which finds its end in the inexplicable that I wish for all its workers, those on the stage and those in the audience, and I wish that with all my heart.

"World Poetry Day" on March 21, 2015, will be celebrated in Turkey as usual. 

After a proposal that has been given to UNESCO by Turkish PEN Centre in 1997, "March 21" was approved as World Poetry Day in 1999. Since then, each year a poet from Turkey who won the yearly poetry prize of Turkish PEN Centre, writes poetry message. 

This year's message was written by Afşar Timuçin, philosopher and poet (1939- *) who won the 2015 Poetry Prize of Turkish PEN Centre. 

Time Travel to Istanbul in the Year 1902: Parma Apartment House

Bridging Ages (http://www.bridgingages.com/), an internationally acclaimed organization, aims to reenact certain time periods in history around the world and build bridges with the past via “Time Travel” projects through which young generations become better equipped with knowledge and understanding in history. Now is the time to host this wonderful event in Istanbul for the next two days (Tuesday and Wednesday) organized in collaboration with Building Bridges Venice, Italian Embassy in Ankara and Italian College. The era and the person to be reenacted alongside the period costumes and decor will be the Ottoman Palace tailor Paul Parma and his levantine family around Pera district of Istanbul. Mario Parma, grandchild of Paul Parma as well as other family members in Italy are expected to participate in the event. This event will take the players back to Istanbul in the year of 1902, a time period when people from different cultures lived together. This dream journey in time beginning at the Parma Apartment House, now also known as Armada Pera Hotel, will come to end with the reenactment at the Venetian Palace (The Pallacio di Venezia) in Istanbul.

The International Theatre Institute announced that following the footsteps of Merce Cunningham, Maurice Béjart, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Mourad Merzouki - the French choreographer, dancer, director of the Centre chorégraphique de Créteil et du Val de Marne and of Käfig’s company, and above all, the famous face of hip hop in France with Accrorap and Pôle Pik companies- will be giving the 2014 International Dance Day Message.

Since its creation in 1982, the International Dance Day celebrated every year on the birthday of the creator of modern ballet Jean-Georges Noverre 29th April, is the occasion to give homage to dance and its universality, crossing all political, cultural and ethnic barriers.
The International Theatre Institute marks this global occasion each year by inviting an outstanding choreographer or dancer to write a message. This message is

translated into more than 20 languages and released throughout the ITI network (more than 70 ITI Centres and numerous Cooperating Members) and dance organizations worldwide.
ITI also seeks to promote national and worldwide activities celebrating International Dance Day. Special dance award ceremonies, charity performances for organizations, people or specific issues connected with dance, conferences, meetings with dancers, amongst others will be held and indexed on a worldwide map available on ITI’s website from 1st April onwards. ITI will celebrate International Dance Day at UNESCO in Paris on 29th April, with the presence of Mourad Merzouki.

Here is the original text of the message:

Every artist takes pride in his art.

Every artist will always defend the art form whose encounter has changed his life.
For that which he has sought and lost and for that which he has the burning desire to share: be it the echo of a voice, the discovered word, the interpretation of a text for humanity, the music without which the universe will stop speaking to us, or the movement which opens the doors to grace.

I have, for dance, not only the pride of a dancer and choreographer, but profound gratitude. Dance gave me my lucky break. It has become my ethics by virtue of its discipline and provided the means through which I discover the world daily.

Closer to me than anything else, it gives me strength each day through the energy and generosity as only dance can. Its poetry comforts me.

Could I say that I wouldn’t exist without dance? Without the capacity for expression it has given me? Without the confidence I have found in it to overcome my fears, to avoid dead ends?

Thanks to dance, immersed in the beauty and complexity of the world, I have become a citizen. A peculiar citizen who reinvents the social codes in the course of his encounters, remaining true to the values of the hip-hop culture which transforms negative energy into a positive force.

I live and breathe dance daily as an honour. But I am living with this honour deeply concerned. I witness around me the loss of bearings and the inability of some of the youth from the working class, growing up in tension and frustration, to imagine their future. I am one of them; so are we all. I am driven, perhaps more than others, by setting an example, to help them fuel their lust for life. 

For isn’t society richer with the richness of each of us?

Culture, more than any discourse, unites. So have courage and take risks despite the obstacles and the hatred with which you will no doubt be confronted; the beauty of the world will always be by your side. Like dance has been for me. With its singular force to eliminate social and ethnic distinctions, leaving but the movement of bodies in their essence, of human beings returning to their pure expression, unique and shared.

I would like to end by quoting René Char whose words remind me daily to not let anyone confine us to scripted roles.

“Push your luck, hold on tight to your good fortune, and take your risk. Watching you, they will get used to it.”

So try, fail, start all over again but above all, dance, never stop dancing!

35th Intercontinental Istanbul Marathon and Today's Traffic

The only run between two continents; The Istanbul Marathon is being the 35th one and is starting this morning, as of 09.00 o'clock! Because of the Marathon some roads will be closed to traffic until 14.30 pm. Please click on the map below thus you can check the course and adjust your plan accordingly.

MARATHON COURSEThe Marathon race starts after 300 m behind the Bosphorus Bridge; racecourse divides in Besiktas turnoff after passing bridge, after this goes down from Barbaros Boulevard to Besiktas, and follows the coastal road it reaches Karakoy.
Runners turn onto Eyup, after the Galata Bridge, and they make turn right after the Feshane, and go towards from Unkapani Road to Yenikapi.
Race course returns from Bakirkoy and continues from coast to Gulhane Park, and goes through the park towards to the Blue Mosque. Hippodrome which, the meeting and sporting centres of Romans, Byzantium and Ottoman Empire, is finish point. The finish line is between entrance gate of Blue Mosque and Egypt Obelisk.
15 KMThe 15 Km race starts after 300 m behind the Bosphorus Bridge; racecourse divides in Besiktas turnoff after passing bridge, after this goes down from Barbaros Boulevard to Besiktas, and follows the coastal road it reaches Karakoy.
Race course will be separated from the marathon course with a return in front of the Yusuf Şücaattin Anbari Mosque in Balat. After returning, athletes go through from the coast road and finishes in front of İstanbul Commerce University in Eminonu.
10 KM
The 10 Km race starts after 250m behind the Marathon race; race course divides in Besiktas turnoff after passing bridge, after this goes down from Barbaros Boulevard to Besiktas, follows the coastal road it reaches in front of İstanbul Commerce University in Eminonu.

For The Attention of Our Guests From Abroad!

We would like to inform you that the protests in Istanbul, were started in Taksim Gezi Park to protect the green area which is very far from the Historical Peninsula where our Hotel stands on. 

It all began with a few tree but upon disproportionate police reaction and some unfortunate statements given by the government to environmentalists, spreaded to whole country even to whole world as an overall democratic reaction! 

But right now the problematic Taksim area is safe and in peace!

We proudly present "The Armada Boat"!

A "commuter" type, classic boat called "Armada 1" has been sailing in the Bosphorus and Golden Horn also around the Prince Islands by attracting great appreciation as of July 2012. Here is one of the feedbacks:

"...The Bosporus really is this city’s spiritual life source. It never gets tiring being on the sea, whatever type of vessel you’re on. However, I have to say, this particular one was the finest I’ve had the pleasure of being aboard, incredibly comfortable, and tastefully appointed. It had all the old school charm in its design that I’d want if I was fortunate enough to be able to afford such a craft. Despite being perfectly happy aboard a vapur on the Bosporus you can imagine how nice it felt to be at the other end of the spectrum..." - Innes Adam Welbourne
