Istanbul Tango Ritual starts on 4th November, 2009 at ARMADA

:: ISTANBUL TANGO RITUAL ::

Theresa Russel and Michael Melvoin were Armada's Guest...

Famous American actrist Theresa Russell whom we remember with her latest appearance on the movie “Spiderman 3”, was in Istanbul right after her visit in Antalya for “The Golden Orange Film Festival” with her famous musician friend Michael Melvoin and chose Hotel Armada for their stay in Istanbul.
During their stay in Armada, Russell and Melvoin dined in “Armada Sera”, enjoying the views of the Prince Islands and the historical peninsula. Surely they brought some home-made cherry liqueur – a speciality of Armada which is produced by the Armada team at the Terrace– back home before leaving!

Just before her departure Russell wrote in Armada’s Honourable Guests Book contently as seen by her expression in the picture that it was such a nice experience to have spent her time at the Hotel Armada.

“Everything about our brief stay here has been unforgettable. Your genereous hospitality is simply the best we have ever experienced.
We will return when we can spend much more time to enjoy your great city and your matchless hotel! When we think of cherry wine your elegant and unique food and service, decoration and setting will come to our minds. Thank you so much!

We will return and only ever stay here!”

AD Reiswereld - Istanbul aan je voeten (379495)

An Armada news in a journal from the Netherland:

AD Reiswereld - Istanbul aan je voeten

"ARMADA HOTEL

The 11st International İstanbul Biennial

Organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts the 11th International İstanbul Biennial will turn the city of Istanbul into a platform for art between September 12 - November 8, capturing the attention of art circles all around the world.

The 11th International İstanbul Biennial will be curated by the curator collective WHW / What, How & For Whom, which has been operating from the city of Zagreb, Croatia, since 1999. WHW consists of four female curators: Ivet Ćurlin, Ana Dević, Nataša Ilić and Sabina Sabolović.

The 11th İstanbul Biennial takes its thematic title “What Keeps Mankind Alive?” from the closing song of the 2nd act of the 1928 play Threepenny Opera, written by Bertolt Brecht, Elisabeth Hauptmann and Kurt Weill.

The conceptual framework that WHW uses for the 11th International İstanbul Biennial is articulated around the idea of “What Keeps Mankind Alive?” However, this framework does not aim to re-discover Brecht, or to present him as a classic for new generations. Rather, the conceptual framework of the İstanbul Biennial proposes to begin re-thinking the past in terms of what has been lost in history. Moreover, it invites us to consider how art today harbours new potential in articulating the age-old relationship between art for social change and aesthetic gestures.

The İstanbul Biennial of IKSV is the activity that has brought the foundation widest international acclaim from art circles all around the world. This year’s Biennial hosts 70 already renowned or recently discovered artists from 40 different countries, exhibiting a total of more than 120 projects.

UNESCO World Dance Day 2009 Message
by Akram Khan

"This very special day, International Dance Day, is dedicated to the one language that everybody in this world can speak, the inherent language of our bodies and our souls, of our ancestors and of our children.

This day is dedicated to every god, guru and grandparent that ever taught and inspired us.

To every song and impulse and moment that's ever moved us to move.

It is dedicated to the little child that wishes it could move like its star. And to the mother who says, 'you already can'.

This day is dedicated to every body of every creed, colour and culture that carries the traditions of its past into stories of the present and dreams of the future.

This day is dedicated to Dance, to its myriad dialects and its immense power to express, transform, unite and delight."

News From The Recently Renovated Armada Hotel

Turning the global inactivity within the first months of 2009 into an opportunity, the Armada Hotel completely renewed its infrastructure and renovated the interior decoration of the historical hotel building which was originally launched in 1994. During the renovation works that lasted a month, the Armada Hotel carefully preserved its most distinguished features as a "city-hotel" within the heart of the historical peninsula of Istanbul and the meeting-point of Istanbul citizens but also Armada become a more comfortable, and more appealing hotel to stay...

Among the most distinct novelties of Armada are:

Personal Climatization: As the ventilation system was completely changed, independent from the central heating system the Armada guests can be able to control and adjust their room temperature as they wish. In the meantime there will be more fresh air within the rooms through the new air lift pumping system.

"De-Luxe" and "Superior" Rooms: In line with the demand from the guests, the standarsd rooms were segmented according to the positioning and comfort level. The "Superior" rooms with sea and historical peninsula view were enlarged and eight of them were decorated as "De-Luxe".

The new luxury rooms were floored with wood parquet and enriched with antique carpets, while the walls were decorated with Ottoman imperial decrees and samples of Ottoman-Turkish cultural heritage. The private bath-rooms were enlarged, paved and tiled with original Turkish marbels and added the sprinkler shower systems. In addition to the facilities such as free ADSL Internet connection, safety box, mini-bar, LCD television, hair-dryer, natural cleaning soap and other materials in all of the rooms, specially woven bathrobes, slippers, pure cotton chamber-robes and tea and coffee trays with kettle were also added to each room.

Marble Pool and the "Divan Corner": The resting divans next to the Guest Lounge in the corner of the Lobby ("Fountain Café"), were completely renewed and decorated with velvet pillows, a bright-coloured carpet and a brass Ottoman brasier. Thus the "Fountain Café" gained a more oriental, more attractive "Divan Corner" towards the "Marble Pool" in which the turtles of Armada continue to meet the guests...

Armada "SERA" Restaurant: The atrium Armada SERA restaurant where the guests are hosted during the winter period, was enlarged and re-decorated with small orange and mandarine trees. A wine cellar with a large collection of premium Turkish wines was also added. Thus, the restaurant also turned into a "Winter Garden" for the daytime guests while it keeps its unique position in the historical peninsula for the guests who want to enjoy Istanbul's night view...

Ahırkapı Restaurant / Armada SALON: Adopting itself to the great variety demands of its users, the historical "Ahırkapı Restaurant" will go on service under a new hat; the multi-purposed "Armada SALON", after the recent renovation. In fact, since 1994, along with its primary function as the place where thousands of guests had/have their meals, the Ahırkapı Restaurant became the venue for a wide range of social events, cultural activities, dance workshops, wedding ceremonies and civil balls which the Armada Hotel revitalized as some of the old Istanbul rituals. During recent renovation all the ventilation, voice and light systems in the SALON were changed with high-technologic ones. Thus, the new Armada SALON is ready to host new guests and events...

Armada Hosts the First Time Performance of “City of Hotels”...

“I am among lyrics and songs,
which had never been written and sung
in any language.”
Edip Cansever

If he were alive, he could have heard his own words as songs in jazz melodies like he used to love and would have been very happy.

Armada will be hosting a poetry performance titled “City of Hotels” of Hümay Güldağ and Metin Belgin on the evening of 18th of November, 2008, Tuesday. Baki Duyarlar will accompany with his piano and the jazz songs composed by himself in the performance where the dramatically edited poems named “City of Hotels” of famous Turkish poet Edip Cansever will be on stage.

“City of Hotels” of Edip Cansever turns into a visual feast in Armada where has an atmosphere gives a feeling of İstanbul in early 20th century. One of the characters in the play of these dramatical poems, “Mrs. Sara” will be played by Hümay Güldağ and Metin Belgin gives life to the characters “Maitre d’hotel” and “ex-husband of Mrs. Sara”. Baki Duyarlar (Named in memory of his father who is a big Turkish Classical Music composer, Baki Duyarlar.) comes along with the performers by playing jazz songs which were particularly composed for the poems of Edip Cansever and this performance, live with the piano. All costume designs belong to Dilara Endican...

“CITY OF HOTELS”

Edip Cansever, who is one of the pioneering poets of “The Second New” movement, constructs his poetry on comprehension of loneliness, cosmic loneliness of the individual. Each of us reach to our own inner voice whenever we read his poems.

“In City of Hotels, not only people come close and draw apart, but also objects, embedded with them, face the same treatment. With the companionship of gin glasses, Ms Sara, being acquainted with her own pains, attends to a different orchestra; “Like a female Christ crucifies herself on life or on death. Honestly, I am not sure, on life or on death? The only thing I know is that she paints the whole book with her own color, like blood leaking from those that I am not able to know.” / Edip Cansever

A Panoramic Delight: Armada “Terrace Bar”

The Armada Terrace, “Historical Penninsula silhouette’s window to the world”, is one of indispensable refreshing venues of the city in summer 2008… this summer is different from the others as well: the “Sedirli Otag” on the terrace has been replaced by “Terrace Bar”!

“Armada Terrace” is one of the most refreshing venues where Istanbul citizens spending the summer in the city can visit after work hours and it is again hosting delicious and romantic dinners in the summer of 2008. This summer, the “Sedirli Otag” located at the Sultanahmet and Hagia Sophia side of the terrace has been replaced by “Terrace Bar”.
At the front end of the terrace overlooking the Marmara Sea and the Princess Islands, dinner service will be continued. At the Terrace Bar, our guests may enjoy cold and hot nibbles from “Cilingir Platters” accompanied by their evening drinks and Istanbul music…
The Terrace Bar is elevated from the terra cotta floor of the Armada Terrace by a timber platfrom and is elegantly shaded by white architectural fabric. Especially at sunset, with its spacious and ample seating provided on sofas and bar stools and white columns of light, the Terrace Bar creates an ambiance of travel on a comfortable boat deck.

But Embraces the Power of Unity, Strength,
And Beauty found within us.

Each Dancing Soul, Young, Old, person livng with a disABILITY
Creates and transforms ideas into life changing moving Art.
Dance is the mirror reflecting the impossible made possible.
For all to touch, hear, feel and experience.

Sounds from our hearts and Soul is our rhythm,
Our every move reveals the history of mankind.
It is the element where the Human Spirit can embrace the ultimate Freedom.

Whenever our hands touch, something beautiful happens,
What the Soul remembers, the body portrays through movement.
Dance is therefore the healing force for all to access,
You are my eyes and I am your feet.
